The Beautiful Game

Imagine Cristiano Ronaldo playing for Brighton & Hove Albion. He'd just get in the way.

original thinking? sweet FA

Sitting at wembley, after defeating the tube strike. There has been the usual pre match content by each of the England sponsors up on the jumbotrons. National Express, Umbro, Carlsberg and Nationwide all had their 30' spots, and all of them were pretty simple - although I still love the Carlsberg positioning, no matter how many executions I see.

However, the thing that made go hold on a minute boys was a spot produced by the FA themselves. After some nice recent work using Ray Winston for the respect campaign there is a new message about playing at the grassroots level and playing for your local team. Now you would hope that the FA would take a fresh approach here, and try and build on the work they did with Winston - however, it seems that instead they just wanted to get a bit lazy. Basically it is a carbon copy rip off / ugly brother of Nike's Take It To The Next Level hero ad from 08, so much so that I want to share them both side by side

There are some nice touches to it, but my point is not about this spot in relation to the Nike one, but just that it always amazes me how little invention people have when talking about football and making videos about it. It is the biggest game in the world and yet often brands and associations get lazy when they try to engage people with it. I also wonder about the minds behind it who sold in the idea and made money from it - guess the pitch must of just been the link above and 'we will do something like this'

Anyway, maybe there is a job for someone there..........
